Torneo de Independencia Esterillos Oeste

Saturday was an awesome day!   Right here in EO we had a surf tournament in honor of Costa Rica's Independence Day which was the prior weekend - Sept. 15.  The tournament was well advertised and as a result turned out to be an over the top wonderful day despite the fact the waves weren't so great.  The quality of surfers and the turn out was phenomenal!

I do not have a great telephoto lens and so most of my photos are primarily what was going on right on the beach.  I think the most wonderful thing about Saturday was our very own local heros were present.  We have several young men who have made a name for themselves in the surf world and right there at the top of that list is Carlos Munoz aka"Cali".  For the past several years he has competed in a number of international tournaments.  Just this past Jan he participated in the Volcom Pipe Pro 2010 in Hawaii.  As many of us from Esterillos watched a big screen television set up at a local restaurant, we exploded into cheers as Cali scored the first perfect 10 of the world-famous competition and earned a $1,000 bonus for having ridden the "highest single wave of the day".

The following is a write up dated 28 Aug. 2012 by Surf Inn in Hermosa, Costa Rica about our Cali:

Carlos Muñoz has been touring his first world tour that began with the 4 star WQS in Mexico where he placed third, went through the U.S. Open in both categories, England, France and goes after the WQS 6 and 3 Stars of Spain and Portugal.

And now: Carlos Munoz wins big in the Pro Junior Lacanau, France, the Association Surfing Professionals (ASP)! In the "Air Walk Lacanau Pro Junior 1 Star", Carlos Munoz -'Cali' beat out rivals Tomothee Bisso of Guadalupe, Vicente Romero of Spain and Portugal's Federico Moarais.

Carlos Munoz is the first Costa Rican under 21 years of age to win A European Title. Cali pulled a huge backside air and had the highest combination in the event: scoring a 9.6 on the busting backside air plus another wave of 7.9 equals the highest final combination of 18.67. This young and upcoming surfer from Esterillos Oeste is one to keep your eyes on!

The ASP Surfing Association noted that Cali dominated the contest from the start.

This victory gives Cali 250 ranking points to the world tour and a big $ 2,000 win! Carlos is now ready for the WQS Open event that will be run on the same wave

The entire day was wonderful.  Many of the locals were present selling food, drinks, clothing, etc.  No matter where I looked - I knew someone, in fact I knew a lot of someones and that was what made this particular day so special.  I am so very fortunate to live in this small coastal town in Costa Rica, to have the many tico and gringo friends I have met here, to be in the present of so many young people that I love and admire.  Life is Awesome.....in Costa Rica :)
